After a 10-year hiatus, Ravi Lau ’92 is rejoining the Lick-Wilmerding community as the Director of the Public Purpose Program (PPP). Lau previously held the title of Director of Community Service, and then later the Director of the Student Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership.

Lau grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from LWHS in 1992 before attending the University of California, Berkeley for his undergraduate education. When asked about what has drawn him to stay within the Bay Area, he expressed his love for the city’s “creative and rebellious spirit,” saying, “there are always lots of changes happening, and people coming and going, but there’s also always an ideal around inclusion.”

Outside of LWHS, Lau enjoys hiking with his family, participating in cultural events and listening to live music outdoors. Recently, Lau attended the opening exhibit within the Oakland Museum of California, titled “Hella Feminist,” which was opened with a concert by local artist Coco Peila. Lau said he found the exhibit to be a “fascinating and meaningful experience.” He hopes to be able to bring his Ethnic Studies class to view the exhibit next semester.

In addition, Lau enjoys playing the drums and used to be a member of San Francisco’s Loco Bloco drumming and dance group. Today he mostly drums recreationally in his free time, but is actively on the lookout for ways to get re-involved with drumming.

This year as the new director of PPP, Lau is excited to get to know the LWHS community, and believes his “purpose is to help other people find their own purposes.” Lau hopes to strengthen  PPP and build it into something that is further aligned with other school programs and classes. His goal is to begin bridging the gap between the class curriculum and PPP. He also wants to change the narrative from it being considered an “extra” into it being “fully integrated into the school day.”
