Celebrating Dee!

On February 28th, Dee Johnson—who served as Lick-Wilmerding High School’s Dean of Equity and Inclusion since the summer of 2020—had her last day working at the school. She leaves behind an enduring legacy as a deeply inspirational, integral member of the community. Students and Facstaff reflect on her impact:

When I think of her, I think of light and love. She tries to bring both into the world…She is powerful. She speaks so much about empowerment and has such a powerful voice, very eloquent, very precise, especially when she speaks about justice, inclusion and belonging,” Dean of Faculty Alegria Barclay said.

“She made our faculty more representative of and more committed to DEI than it ever could have been before… and her singing is just an unfiltered, unscheduled burst of joy every now and then,” history teacher Shaun Lopez said.

“She changed the DEI perspective and redirected us in a more positive way. She was able to really give light to things that needed to be shared,” Camryn Marlow ’27 said.

“Every student that had the privilege of entering her office felt so cared for. She is so thoughtful,”  Saahil Mishra ’25 said.

“She was really the backbone of our community,” Redd Dyer ’26 said.

“I love that Dee always looks for the best in everybody. She has a really beautiful outlook on life, and at the same time, can push you to think deeper and reflect more, and she pushes you to be a better person,” college counselor Gabriela Mejia said.

“If it had to be one word, I would definitely say beloved,” Raquel Oliva-Gomez said.

Though Johnson will be missed, her work here at LWHS will continue to live on through all who walked the halls with her.
