Few people have played the active role that Benny Gold has played in spearheading San Francisco’s advancement as an art and design town. Over the past three years, Gold has worked on projects with Jansport, Pendleton, The Hundreds, Diamond Supply Co., Herman Miller, Santa Cruz, Miller High Life, and Super Bowl 50. Based in the mission, Gold’s store (which goes by the same name) has promoted a design and skater oriented vibe in the community. After starting as a graphic designer with several corporate firms, Gold decided to implement more of his own attitudes, resulting in the Benny Gold mantras: “Stay Gold”, and “Works for Jerks”, which lead to one mantra on Gold’s clothing lines, “Anti-Work Wear”.
Since Gold’s transition to founding his own company, he has been interviewed by Hypebeast Magazine, High Snobiety, and Pages Magazine. Our very own interview with Gold goes as follows:
Are there any specific events in San Francisco’s history that you draw inspiration from? Any geographical locations?
San Francisco has a rich history and there is so much to draw inspiration. 90’s skateboarding in SF was big for me and serves as a daily inspiration.
What was it like having your store located in the heart of the Mission for seven years?
I have seen the mission change since we opened our doors seven years ago. It has been interesting to see the neighborhood go from a well kept local secret to tourist destination.
What was it like working with the NFL during your two-part collaboration with them over Super Bowl 50?
The NFL collaboration was a dream come true. We were legally allowed to use the 49er artwork — it doesn’t get cooler then that!
Do you ever see yourself being based out of somewhere other than San Francisco? Would that drastically alter/affect your creative process?
I am sure being based somewhere other than SF would somewhat alter my creative process, but I believe that creativity is inside you and no matter where you go there you are.
If you’re looking for inspiration on a day in SF, where do you go and what do you do?
If I am having difficulties solving a design issue I will put the pencil down, step away from the computer and go push around the neighborhood on my skateboard. It helps clear my head.
