The 73rd Annual Golden Globes ceremony was held on January 10 at the Beverly Hilton. Ricky Gervais hosted the event and it was certainly full of laughs.
However, many of the nominees and winners also caused viewers to laugh— in utter disbelief. The most shocking announcement was the Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy. Previous winners included successful musicals such as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, or comedies such as The Hangover or The Grand Budapest Hotel. This year, however, The Martian, a suspenseful thriller with lots of comic relief, beat out comedy heavyweights such as Spy and Trainwreck.
One of the most controversial moments came well before the night of the ceremony, when the nominations were released. The story about the inception of NWA, Straight Outta Compton, wasn’t nominated for best picture, none of its actors was nominated, and it didn’t even get a nod for best score or song. (NWA officially stands for N*&!z Wit Attitudes, offered in its PC version as No Whites Allowed,) Many consider this a gross snub, and some even consider it borderline racism.
Some good news: Leonardo diCaprio won Best Actor for his starring role in The Revenant, making him a favorite for the same award in the Oscars, a prize which has infamously eluded him.
