Hannah Perry-Zeik, who goes by Ms. PZ, joins the Lick-Wilmerding High School community as a math teacher, currently teaching Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus Honors. Originally from the Hudson Valley area in New York, Perry-Zeik enjoyed English and math during school.
When she started at Kenyon College, she intended to major in English because it was always her favorite subject, but said that “ I just kept on taking more math classes and enjoying them, until I ended up kind of accidentally majoring in math.” Being a teacher also came naturally to her. “I just liked math, and I kept on doing it, and I was a camp counselor, and I led backpacking trips, so I worked with kids there, and then eventually I was like, I guess the thing that I could do with the things that I like doing is being a math teacher,” she said. What brought Perry-Zeik to the Bay Area was a desire for a change in scenery. She enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, biking, running and backpacking, and thought San Francisco was the perfect place to do more of that. “It seemed like a nice place to live,” she said. Marin is one of her favorite places to bike up to and to go trail running. Outside of school, she also enjoys reading, particularly fiction.
Perry-Zeik was drawn to LWHS by our Public Purpose Program, mission and curious community. “It seemed like a really engaging curriculum, and I figured that the students would be really excited to learn here,” she said. As a teacher, she wants to help each student according to their needs as individuals, and make sure they are engaged and interested in the subject. She explained that being adaptable based on the student is important to her.
Her goal for her first year is to get to know as many people as possible. Perry-Zeik hopes for her students to leave her class feeling “that they enjoyed something in math,” she said.
