Kim Bowers

The Lick-Wilmerding community welcomes Kim Bowers as a new member of the English department. Growing up in Arlington, Texas, Bowers loved the kindness and strong sense of determination in her community. However, she’s always dreamed of moving to California—inspired, in part, by her parents’ love for San Francisco and also because she thought California would be a cool place to live.

Before joining LWHS, Bowers taught at the university level. Her decision to teach at LWHS reignited her passion for teaching, reminding her of what she loves most about it: the community and creativity. While she was a substitute last year and did not get much of a chance to deeply connect with students, Bowers is excited about her new, permanent role and the opportunity to bond with students and see their growth throughout the year.

Outside of the classroom, Bowers loves to kayak in Sausalito and hike with her dog—two activities that have provided a sense of joy for Bowers throughout her life. Bowers holds a unique approach to goal setting which emphasizes the importance of welcoming spontaneity and new opportunities. “Sometimes goals get in the way of other wonderful things happening that you would never plan for… I like to allow this space for something to grab my imagination,” she said.

Bowers invites LWHS students to believe in themselves and not allow others to limit their potential. “My mother said to me, ‘You’re never going to get a doctorate’ but I ended up getting one anyway. Those kinds of limits that other people set on you? Don’t let them,” Bowers said. Additionally, Bowers emphasizes the importance of focusing on personal passions and goals rather than comparing oneself to others.

With her adventurous spirit and passion for community, Bowers is excited to create connections with students and inspire them to pursue their passions. Her journey reflects her deep commitment to education and her fresh perspective that will enhance the LWHS community.
