Laura Miglani

Señora Laura Miglani teaches Spanish at Lick-Wilmerding High School. Born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, she immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 16 and settled in the Bay Area. She considers both places her home. Miglani taught Spanish at the Taipei American School for most of her teaching career. Having spent eight years in Taipei, Taiwan, she relocated back to the Bay Area. Before coming to LWHS, she taught at the Nueva School on the Peninsula.

Miglani is excited for this school year and would like to “fast forward and get to the place where everyone really knows each other and they are very comfortable.” In addition to loving her classes, she is looking forward to spending time with her students.

Last year, Miglani ditched her Señorita title and got married. Students who have not already had a class with her will likely not meet her until 2023, as she is currently on maternity leave.

Miglani wants her students to know that she enjoys “being pulled aside and talking one-on-one.”  She is much more extroverted and energetic around smaller groups of people.

Having traveled extensively, she describes herself as someone who is very “international-minded.” In conversation, she enjoys “finding out interesting things about people and what they like.”

One of Miglani’s most unique talents is wheel figure skating, a sport that is not practiced by many people. Studying and dancing dominate her memories of high school, and her time was divided between the two. She was a member of the dance team and assiduous in her pursuit of learning. She recalls, “There had never been a time in my life when I had studied so much.”

The transition from Spanish to English was one of the most difficult parts of her matriculation into high school in the United States. She remembers the daunting times during her English class when she would have vocabulary quizzes.  Miglani said, “I had to learn everything because I didn’t know anything,” she said. Her accomplishment was no easy feat, but with dedication and hard work, she persevered and excelled.
