Lick’s 2019 fall play is Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, written in 1938. Our Town is a beautiful story about people living in the small fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. The action of the lay begins in 1901 and follows the stories of two families, the Webbs and the Gibbs, as well as those who live around them, over two decades. The play showcases how people and places change over time and how our perceptions can shift as we grow older.
The play, in three acts, is narrated by a character called the stage manager. They call in other characters to help guide the audience. The plot focuses on two children of the Gibbs and Webb families, George and Emily, as their relationship progresses, becomes romantic, and they marry and have children.
Our Town is staged with few props, simple staging, and a minimal set to convey the idea that the play is about a normal American family in a normal American town.
