The Lick-Wilmerding High School community welcomes Maycon Santos as the new Associate Director of Communications. Their role includes creating the eTiger, photography for the school and managing the school’s social media and website.

Santos, who previously worked at the Live Oak School as an Advancement Associate, organizing events to engage with donors in the community, explained that their interest in communications stemmed from their love to tell stories and the creativity involved with working in communications.

Santos grew up in the small town, Cerquilho in Brazil, which is two hours away from São Paulo. From a young age, they have been passionate about fashion; they have worked in retail, which was the first place they were introduced to communications, and have always loved styling their friends

After graduating high school, Santos took a gap year, and ultimately majored in Fashion Design and Communication at Centro Universitário Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio, a university in Salto, São Paulo. Santos appreciated the accepting nature of São Paulo, which celebrated queerness, unlike their conservative hometown. “It was the first place that I used to go when I was younger that I felt that I could be myself, that people were themselves.”

They moved from Brazil to the United States seven years ago and have been living in San Francisco since 2019. After moving here, Santos found a similar sense of freedom that they experienced in São Paulo. “The reason I came and stayed was because I wanted a place where I could explore my identity, my expression. San Francisco is a great city to do that [and find a] space for you to be yourself,” they said.

LWHS is the second school where Santos has worked in communications. “Working at independent schools sometimes can be challenging because not every school aligns with your personal values. What drew me to Lick was the school’s commitment to social justice. There is an awareness of the privilege and power it holds and an intentional eagerness to leverage that to serve others,” they said.

At LWHS, Santos is looking forward to being a part of “a beautiful high school environment where kids are healthy and thriving.” After their first few months, they expressed how welcome they feel within the LWHS community.

When they’re not in the communications office, Santos loves practicing languages and hopes to reach their goal of becoming a polyglot. They are fluent in Portuguese and English, and spend their free time practicing Spanish by listening to their favorite reggaeton artists, Karol G and Bad Bunny. They would love to practice speaking Spanish with students, and are excited to get to know the community this year.
