Playlist of the Week: Laurel Nathanson

“I missed my calling, for I was born with a tremendous inability to hold a note. My dreams as a singer songwriter were shattered early on, for like my mom, and Grandmother, and her mom, I came from a long line of women who have painfully bad singing voices. Instead of dwelling on what would never be, I instead became obsessed with female singer/songwriters. I consider myself raised by Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Carole King and Grace Slick. I was taught how to be, how to dream, how to create beauty, and how to live outside of preconceived expectations by too many strong, talented, brilliant women to boil this list down to a mere ten favorite songs, but alas, that is the challenge set before me. In chronological order, these are songs by ten of the woman, ten of the people actually, who have had the most profound impact on my life. My guitar might be imaginary, but because of them I sing.”
