Led by captains Amie Baumgartner ‘17 and Warren Tse ‘17 Lick Badminton has had an impressive season so far with a season record of 12-2. This year has been exceptionally exciting as the Varsity Badminton team beat league rivals University High School for the first time in four years and finished in second place in league. After impressive BCL wins on May 5 in which Baumgartner and Tse won first place in mixed doubles, Patrick Darmarwi-Iskandar ’19 and Tiffany Tang ‘19 won third for mixed doubles, Lucas Unietis ‘17 and Matt Han ‘17 placed fourth for boy doubles. The team will be sending players off to NCS for two events. Although some of its best players are seniors and will graduae this year, outstanding underclassmen such as Darmarwi-Iskandar, Tang, and Melinda Liu ‘20 show promise for the team’s future success.

Baseball

After losing five vital seniors last year the Varsity Boys’ Baseball team had a rough start to the season, but under the leadership of their captains Ben Fleischmann ‘17, Dylan Drummer ‘17, Jonah Gerard-Grossman ‘17 and Jared Wong ‘17, they quickly came back and currently have a record of 9-11-1. With multiple players leading the league statistically with their impressive slugging percentages, runs batted in, and base percentage, the team has once again proved they are a force to be reckoned with. One of their biggest wins this season was on Senior Night against league rivals Marin Academy when they came back — after being down by 5 runs — in the very last inning and won 13-12. Currently, the varsity boys are placed third in BCL West and are likely to qualify for NCS as well.

Boys Lacrosse

The season started off rocky, as the Boys Lacrosse team lost four consecutive games all within a one point margin, including a particularly devastating loss against Urban. However, under the leadership of captains Liam Maniscalco ‘18, Ryan Kimball ‘17, both of whom anchored the defense, and Maurice Green ‘18, who led the offense, the team was able to win a game against Head-Royce. The season ended with a loss against Marin Academy during the BCL playoffs––the game’s final score was 9-3. Despite the tumultuous season, multiple key players became integral to the team’s success including Noah Kilpack ‘20, who was awarded Most Improved, Dylan Moser ‘18 who played a strong season as goalie, and Maniscalco who was recognized as the Most Valuable Player.

Due to the growing popularity of Girls Lacrosse at LWHS, this was the second year that there was both a JV and Varsity team. The JV team excelled when they beat University’s JV team, a first for Lick’s girls lacrosse. While the Varsity team consisted of many returning players, they were joined by  freshman Mira Jess Larrance ‘20, Sofia Morris ‘20, and Ingrid Sigfstead ‘20. The team had an exemplary record of 12-5, including the postseason. Sara Kashani-Sabet ‘19 comments on their success as a team, “Over the season we’ve grown a lot and learned to work effectively together. We’ve become very tight-knit.” A game against Sonoma Academy was a notable moment in the season. The team was down 8-2 at halftime, but came back and won 10-9. They made it to playoffs against Marin Academy. While they unfortunately lost that game, they still advanced to the second round of NCS. Some of the key players that aided in the team’s success include Zeli Grey ‘17, Emily Rupright ‘18 and Lauren Carothers- Liske ‘18.

Sailing

This season marks the fourth year of sailing at Lick. Terrific. Lead by captain and senior Parker Klebahn ‘17, the team was ranked as the top high school in the Bay Area as well as first in the A division—which includes the whole West Coast of the United States. Throughout the season the team spent 16 weekends travelling around the West Coast and Bay Area; they finished off the season strong after winning first in three events and taking second in another.  Klebahn describes this season as “our best year yet” and notes the great contributions of the two newest sailors Tyler Davis ‘18 and James Scherr ‘20. Although the team will be losing Klebahn next season, this year has clearly declared Lick as a dominant sailing team for the future.

Swimming

Led by captains Leila Kashani-Sabet ‘17, Kelby Kramer ‘17, Jane Liu ‘17, Isabel Siu ‘17 and Keanu Velasquez ‘17, Varsity Swimming has had an impressive season where both Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity placed in the top three at BCLs. This year the team is sending 11 swimmers to NCS for the 200IM Relay Boys (Chris Chen ‘20, Will Layton ‘18, Kramer and Velasquez), 200IM Relay Girls (Evan Fuller ’18, Naomi Locala ’20, Audrey Lukawski ’18 and Julia Martin ‘20,), 200 Free Relay Boys (Chen, Nick Dolce ‘18, Kramer and Velasquez), 400 Free Relay Girls (Locala, Lukawski, Martin, and Emily Snisarenko ‘18), 50 Free (Dolce), 100 Breast (Lukawski), 100 Fly (Locala) and 200 Free (Locala). This is one of the strongest group of swimmers  the team has ever sent to NCS and they have a high chance of being in the NCS finals. Although the team is graduating many important seniors, junior swimmers Dolce, Lukawski, and Snisarenko along with strong point scoring underclassmen such as Locala and Chen show a promising future for the swim team.

Boys Tennis

After losing eight players on the varsity lineup, the team has still done well this year. In league tennis matches, they had three singles matches and two doubles matches, which amounts to a total of seven players. Despite losing more players from last year’s team than there ended up being on this year’s team, they were able to maintain a record of 7-5. They placed fourth in regular season, and reached the semifinals of BCL playoffs. Captain Rayaan Mohtashemi ‘17 comments, “I’m proud of how our very young team, as the majority of the varsity team were underclassmen, stepped up this season.” The team welcomed freshmen Kaya Erol ‘20 and John Peabody ‘20, both of whom were invaluable additions to the singles lineup. Sophomores Tianming Chu ‘19, Henry Stiepleman ‘19, and Phineas Horowitz ‘19, along with senior John Craig ‘17 were all new to the team. They’ve improved greatly and strengthened the doubles lineup. Notably, Nameer Hirschkind ‘19 won the individual singles consolation tournament and duo Benjamin Field ‘18 and Blayden Lee ‘19 won the individual doubles consolation tournament. They’re looking forward to their first NCS game against Bishop O’Dowd.

Track and Field

Track and Field has had a powerful season so far with both the girls’ and boys’ teams in second place in BCL West. While the team graduated some valuable assets in the field events last year, athletes such as Aubrey Egerter ‘17, Maia Shwarts ‘17 and Chris Leung ‘17 have stepped up significantly serving as top scorers in long jumps, throwing events and the high jump this season. Top distance runners Jill Reilly ‘17, Lindsey Bach ‘17, Mira Terdiman ‘20, Viva Donohoe ‘20, Erik Stein ‘18 and Sean Laidlaw ‘18 have also been crucial to the team’s success this year. In addition, Terdiman set a new freshman record for the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M while Donohoe set the 400M record. Both Terdiman and Donohoe typically are a part of the 4×400, 4×800 and 4×1600 groups alongside Chloe Davis ‘20 and Jeannie Moreno ‘20; the quartet broke the previous freshman records for all four of these events this season. These strength of these freshman runners along with Eddie Dilworth ‘19 (800M), Raphael Gonzalez ‘19 (throws), Ben Harris ‘19 (hurdles), Nick Harris ’19 (800M) and Alison Savage Brooks ‘19 (800M) bodes well for the future success of the team.

Congratulations to this year’s Athletic Award winners!
