Spring Style at Lick-Wilmerding

Adidas Superstars

The Adidas Superstars, first released in 1969 and later popularized by the 1984 song “My Adidas” by DMC, have made a comeback in the past year. The Superstars marry comfort and style, so it is no surprise that they are back in. Easy to sport with a pair of black jeans or a casual mini dress, they are also extremely versatile. Walking around Lick you are bound to see someone wearing the Superstars, which are most popular in white with black, green, red, pink or white stripes. The sister shoe, the Adidas Stan Smiths, also come in white with green, blue or red accents to name a few.

Baseball Caps

Baseball caps are not just for baseball games anymore. Over the course of the school year, hats have become an essential part of any streetwear look. Baseball caps, which can come with or without text, are manufactured in all colors, sizes and patterns. Now trending as “dad caps,” curved brimmed hats are adjustable, making them comfortable and easy to wear. When asked why he wears dad caps, style icon Maiyio Taylor-Jackson ’17 explains, “From political messages to song quotes, the dad cap is a direct representation of today’s culture and us as youth.” And how do you wear them? Taylor-Jackson recommends donning the hat with a crewneck sweatshirt, your favorite jeans, some Adidas Superstars and a watch.

Bomber Jackets

The bomber jacket has recently re-emerged onto the style scene. Another versatile look, the bomber jacket can look good on anyone. The jacket comes in all different styles: shiny, matte, polyester, leather, simplistic or adorned with patches.Regardless of your gender identity, there are numerous ways to incorporate the bomber jacket into your favorite outfit. Turn your shopping trip into an adventure by going to a local vintage shop to find real aviator inspired jackets. It may take more work than going to a brand name store, but all it takes is an eye for your personal style to find the right fit for you.

Lace Up Shirt/Dress

If you’ve taken a lap around the city, the school, or even stayed on your couch and browsed social media in the past few months, it is likely that you have seen someone wearing either a lace up shirt or lace up dress. Moreover, if you have been shopping in any store, from a department store downtown to a thrift shop in the Haight, it is almost inevitable that you have seen a variation of this style. The deep V-neck covered by a lace-up drawstring is an updated, fitted take on the pirate look.

Half Up Half Down

Hairstyles are a more unconventional trend, but are worth noting, as they can really enhance a look. Recently, many people with longer hair have been rocking the half up half down look – a ponytail or bun that includes half the hair on the head, while the other half hangs down. The stereotypically male version of this hairdo – “the man bun” – has taken Lick by storm, though the look is not exclusive to males. Male-identifying people, female-identifying people, and gender nonconforming folks have all brought the look to life. No matter who is sporting it, the half up half down hairstyle serves as a stylish way to keep hair out of your face.

Socks (with Sandals)

Though socks and sandals are often associated with clueless tourists, movie nerds, and function-over-fashion parents, the look has recently undergone a major makeover. Frilly socks with huarache-inspired sandals are totally on trend. Whether you pair them with a button down skirt and a pullover sweater or baggy jeans and a long sleeved T-shirt, you are guaranteed to be noticed. If you’re feeling adventurous, try sporting socks with heeled Mary Janes or flat oxfords.

T-Shirt Dresses

T-shirt dresses have been trending at Lick for a while now. As the name suggests, the T-shirt dress combines the style of a T-shirt with the fluidity and length of a dress. KK Narita ’16, who designs and creates her own T-shirt dresses, likes making and wearing them because “they’re super comfortable and I think they’re a little more fun than just wearing a T-shirt and jeans.”

Denim Skirts

The 1990s are back in and so are denim skirts! This retro look comes in many styles from knee-length, to mini to A-line with buttons down the front. Denim skirts are a perfect addition any simple spring and summer outfit. Pair your denim with sandals (or maybe socks and sandals), a top and a cardigan and you’re ready to go. Or if that’s not your style, rock boots or tennis shoes with a graphic tee and a leather jacket.
