Around the Bay Area

January 25: A rebuilt section of the Fountaingrove neighborhood in northern Santa Rosa. Nearly every building in this image is new construction, after the Tubbs Fire destroyed the neighborhood in October 2017.

March 29: Graffiti on Masonic Avenue in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood offered words of encouragement to passersby just two weeks into the stay-at-home order.

April 17: People walked past Puerto Alegre taqueria in the Mission District. Murals and graffiti offering reassurance and positive messages became common around the city in the early days of the pandemic when most restaurants and other non-essential businesses were closed.

May 9: Large numbers of shoppers at the Ferry Building Farmers’ Market made it impossible to maintain social distancing.

May 9: A homeless man asked for food outside the Ferry Building Farmers’ Market. San Francisco officials stopped cracking down on tent encampments in March and have since been offering temporary shelter in hotel rooms to some of the city’s more than eight thousand unhoused residents.
