Varsity Girls Tennis – Quest for the BCL Title

In the past two years, Lick-Wilmerding Girls Varsity Tennis has won back to back BCL championships. Last year they had a team of eleven seniors and six captains, this year they have three captains and eighteen players; eight of whom are underclassmen. Last year they made it to NCS semi-finals and after the loss of their senior captains, this year the new captains of the varsity squad are redefining the team’s dynamic to support the skills and talent of the current team.

How have the new and old players contributed to the success of this year’s team? Jeanne Peabody ‘18, a sophomore who played varsity her freshman year, says, “This year, we have a lot of underclassmen on our team. It’s good to have a young team that you can train and build on, and they are all learning so fast!”

According to Peabody, “Our goal this season is to #3peat. We’ve won BCL’s two years in a row and last year we made it to the Semi-finals of NCS. We want to improve and have fun while playing championship tennis!” As of now, the team has a record of 4-1-0, with wins in their first four league matches against Urban, International, Drew, and Bay. They lost Friday, October 23rd to BCL rival University and subsequently lost their league. We will cheer on girl’s varsity tennis for the BCL title Friday, October 30rd at 3:30 at the Golden Gate Park Tennis Courts.
