Vlad Serrato

Vlad Serrato joins the Lick-Wilmerding High School community as a Spanish teacher. He currently teaches Spanish 1, Spanish 2 and Spanish for Heritage Speakers.

Serrato was born in the North Bay, and says he has “tumbled” around the Bay Area his whole life. For high school, he attended Natomas Charter School, a high school for the performing arts. “I remember being lucky enough to explore different forms of art media and being able to find myself in creativity. Unfortunately, I surrendered that to academics. But now I’m in a phase of my life where I’m trying to re-explore it,” he said. This re-exploration of his creative side includes pottery and ceramics, which he started doing over the summer.

After high school, Serrato attended UC Berkeley before moving to Egypt. In his 5 years living there, he worked as a translator and interpreter for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), using his fluency in Spanish, Arabic, English, French, and Portuguese.

“I consider myself a language geek. I love teaching and learning languages. If any students want to geek out with me, that would be great!” Serrato shared. In addition to his love for languages, Serrato has an unmatched passion for cooking and baking. He is particularly interested in baking bread. “I love making different types of bread from different regions. Right now I’m trying to perfect my focaccia.”

When he is not baking bread, Serrato loves cooking and eating Mexican food, as it reminds him of the flavors he grew up enjoying. He is also devoted to branching out and has recently been cooking and eating many Korean recipes.

Serrato is inspired by the support and uplifting energy of the LWHS community. He loves teaching because of how rewarding it is, and he is excited by the collaborative energy of LWHS students. “It truly feels like a special place,” he said.
