The Tigers are hitting the court and field in both basketball and soccer as winter sports kick off at Lick-Wilmerding High School.
Boys’ Varsity Soccer, led by captains Benny Wertheimer ’23, Jimmy O’Connell ’23 and Jonathan Locala ’23 are ready for a solid season. Jasper Champa ’23, a senior on the team, spoke about the team’s goals for the season. “We want to be proactive about our team health and we want to make it to the NCS finals,” Champa said. The team is very excited and ready for a dominant season as seen by their hot start to the season, winning two of their first three games.
Girls’ Varsity Soccer, led by captains Ceci Rodriguez ’23, Alexa DiSabato ’23, Sophie Spokes ’23 and Ella English ’23 looks poised for a strong season even with many new faces. “This year, the team only has about eight returning varsity players from last year and 14 new players,” Rodriguez explained.
However, Rodriguez is ready for the challenge of having so many players. “I feel a personal responsibility to continue the sense of family on the team that I have felt in the past, and even aim to strengthen it,” she said. Rodriguez explained her goals of the season were of course winning, but also prioritizing “building a team environment where we uplift and motivate each other.”

Boys’ Varsity Basketball, led by Peter Drew ’23, Jake McDonald ’23 and Max Meyer ’23, is off to a strong start, showing exciting capabilities during the annual LWHS basketball tournament. Meyer explained that a team’s strength comes from how close it is. “We’re all pretty good friends and can joke on and off the court, and that brings us closer and boosts our chemistry,” he said.
“I think we’re a really disciplined team,” added Elias Colfax ’23. “We have a really diverse group of guys and players who are willing to play their roles and do what it takes.”
Some highlights to look forward to this year include the return of the annual Chase Center game versus rival University High School for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Girls’ Varsity Basketball looks to build on a stellar season last year, captained by Kailee Mahlstedt-Kamekona ’23 and Nina Laser ’23. Unique to this year is the number of underclassmen on the team. “Some strengths come from the freshman. They hold each other accountable and push each other to get better. Seeing that they can shine and push each other is really good,” said Mahlstedt-Kamekona.
Get ready to watch the Tigers at Chase with the return of the game this year. Three years ago in January, when the game at Chase was last held, the Tigers decimated the Running Red Devils by a score of 64-26, leading to many disappointed University fans exiting early.
