Mike Clayton

Mike Clayton grew up in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, a rural town of around 3000 people. He wanted to branch out and experience life in a bigger city, which compelled him to move to San Francisco. Clayton appreciates the wide variety in all that San Francisco has to offer, speciality in theater, through its robust offer of musicals and plays. He lives in the Sunset neighborhood, giving him prime access to Golden Gate Park and allowing him to spend time in the fog.

Clayton has been a teacher for nearly a decade, working in mostly public schools. To Clayton, teaching is an opportunity to “present challenges, encourage students to embrace [them] and to recognize that growth happens in that moment.”

Clayton has taught at the Denver School of Science and Technology and Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) San Francisco College Preparatory. Clayton has mostly worked with classes of larger students, and appreciates being able to work with smaller groups of students at Lick-Wilmerding High School.

As someone who attended a small liberal arts college, Kenyon College- in Gambier, Ohio, Clayton appreciates that LWHS offers a “well-rounded liberal arts education”. Clayton states that “education is not purely of the mind, education is of multiple disciplines”.

Clayton teaches the U.S. History Honors Class for Juniors at LWHS and finds history to be very intriguing, as it is “a lens into understanding societal structures.” Clayton believes that we can trace current systems and structures in modern society to understand how they came about through learning history. To him, learning history also presents a fundamental opportunity to understand one’s own culture.

Outside of teaching, Clayton enjoys playing board games, especially Wingspan, and loves cooking chili. He also loves to travel and has been to South America, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, and to Northern and Western Europe. Clayton is looking forward to getting to know students this year!
