Sofia Whitley joins the Lick-Wilmerding High School community as the Office Coordinator and Assistant to the Deans.
She attended University of California, Santa Cruz, and worked at Beach Elementary School in Piedmont before coming to LWHS.
Whitley is a proud dog mom. On the weekends you will find her walking her three-year-old golden doodle, Homer, at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland for its beautiful sights of the city’s landscape.
But Homer is not the only thing Sofia raises. At her old school, Whitley and her colleague made five sourdough bread starts from scratch to make with the students, one of the many ways she worked to engage with the student body. One start, named Rita, is still alive and waiting for its next round in the oven.
Despite being from Oakland, Whitley does not describe herself as a city person. “I like to get out of crowds, so I tend to find myself veering further north,” Whitley said. She loves hiking in Point Reyes and Redwood Regional Park. This past summer, Whitley has also gotten into running.
A highlight of her time at LWHS so far has been, without a doubt, “The number of people who check in everyday and just ask [her] how [she is] doing or how [she is] adjusting, and that’s faculty and students!” Whitley said.
This year, she looks forward to connecting more with the LWHS student body. Whitley tells students to, in the future, look out for some fun “front desk type activities” to start your day off right. Whether you want to chat about Jorja Smith, New Girl, or a secret special ingredient to elevate your blueberry muffin game, stop by the front desk and say hello to Sofia!
