Caffe Trieste: A “Neighborhood’s Living Room”

Based in the heart of North Beach, Caffe Trieste has been a central part of the community for over 50 years. It was a common meeting place for famous Beat activists and artists in the 1950s and 60s and continues to provide its community with warm hospitality, family and delicious Italian coffee blends. Caffe Trieste’s family-oriented maneuver, kind-hearted staff and regulars are what makes it a neighborhood staple.

Located at 601 Vallejo Street, San Francisco, Caffe Trieste was established in 1956 by Giovanni Giotta, also known as Papa Gianni. Born in Italy, Giotta wanted to usher the exquisite taste of espresso coffee from his home town in Trieste, Italy to the locals in San Francisco. For these efforts, Giotta is often regarded as the “espresso pioneer of the West Coast.” In addition, Giotta’s cafe is credited with having helped develop the Italian community in San Francisco.

In 2017, the cafe introduced new owners: Ida Zoubi, Giotta’s granddaughter and Adrienne Giotta, Giotta’s daughter-in-law. They work hard to preserve the cafe’s rich traditions and atmosphere. The cafe is adorned with the same decorations and photos since its establishment in 1956, and their original sign is still posted outside. Furthermore, all work is done by hand and despite modernizing technology, the cafe is strictly cash only.

Paul Bracco, Caffe Trieste’s longest working barista, began working at the cafe in 1979 when he was 17. He explained how Caffe Trieste has remained a neighborhood favorite throughout his 45 years working there. “We like to keep things the way they originally were. Everything is exactly the same, and that’s what people love about Caffe Trieste. People stop by the cafe to pay for the same thing that got us here. That is why we don’t try to change anything,” Bracco said.

They recently developed a coffee roasting warehouse across the city and, in 2021, added an extension next door to Caffe Treiste; the Annex Retail store, which roasts fresh blends of coffee every morning for the cafe. With the partnership of coffee brokers in South America, the cafe offers 13 different blends of coffee ranging from light to dark roasts. Customer favorites are the 100% Colombia, Italian Roast Espresso and the North Beach blend.

Serving its community for over 50 years, Caffe Trieste has become a neighborhood anchor for artists, poets and regulars, offering a tight knit, family-oriented community. “It’s the neighborhood’s living room,” Bracco said, “The people that come to Caffe Trieste get very personal with and protective of the cafe. After all, Caffe Trieste is family, and our regulars have gotten the chance to see our family grow and maintain the cafe’s original glory.”

Amongst the cafe’s notable regulars is Francis Ford Coppola, who worked on writing the script of “The Godfather” at the cafe and the late Lawrence Ferlinghetti, co-founder of the beloved City Lights Booksellers & Publishers. Very proud of their success, Caffe Trieste has decorated their walls with photos of their famous customers, continuing to open their doors to aspiring stars through their frequent events throughout the year.

Every Saturday, local artists and celebrities visit the cafe for the Caffe Trieste Saturday Concert. This weekly tradition first started in 1971 by Giotta who loved to sing at the cafe; he studied opera in Trieste, Italy. Until this day, the Caffe Trieste Saturday Concert is credited with being one of the longest running musical shows in San Francisco. Most Saturday afternoons, you can catch local artists as well as the owner’s family singing, accompanied by live music every evening. “The cafe’s playful personality is part of its charm,” Bracco said.

Looking at many more prosperous years for the cafe, customers and workers hope to see Caffe Trieste maintain their rich traditions amidst the modernizing world.“Our history, tradition and changeless maneuver is what makes Caffe Trieste so special”, said Bracco. Their simple approach to serving their community one cup of coffee at a time will never change; the community will only grow.
